One of The Cannington Lions Club's purposes is to spearhead and fund improvements in our community.  The Cannington Lions Club's Civic Improvement Committee establishes projects which are then approved by The Club.  These projects sometimes take only weeks to complete and sometimes they take months or years.  Much of the fundraising done by our Club goes into these community pojects.  This page will keep you up to date on the progress of such projects.

If you have an idea for a potential community project contact our club.

Downtown Flag Project

This project is designed to improve the visual aspect of Cannington's downtown as well as show pride for our country.  The project will see each light standard in downtown Cannington have two Canadian flags situated with one over the sidewalk and one over the roadway.  The Cannington Lions Club is funding 100% of this project with manpower assistance from The Works Department of The Township of Brock.  The flags will be put up each May and taken down in November (to protect against ice damage).  Flags will be replaced as needed by The Cannington Lions Club.

Community Service Sign Project

This project will see the replacement of the Community Service signs at the East and West entrances to Cannington on Cameron Street (Regional Road 12).  The sign at the East end of town fell to the wind a number of years ago and the East end sign is in poor shape.

The Cannington Lions Club is fully funding this initiative with assistance from The Township and Region of Durham in placement.  The signs have to follow new design specifications laid out by The Region of Durham.

Logos of Community Service groups will be placed on the new signs.  There will also be a new area on each sign where public events and other announcements may be posted.  Also on each sign there will be a Fire Hazard/Ban warning which will be regularly updated by The Brock Township Fire Department.

Solar powered lighting will also likely be added in the future.

Sport Equipment Bank

This project would see the development of a sports equipment bank where youth would be able to sign out or borrow sporting equipment for use in activities in MacLeod Park.  Equipment available for use AT NO COST to our youth would include:

  • Baseball equipment
  • Tennis equipment
  • Volleyball equipment
  • Ball hockey equipment
  • Soccer balls

The Cannington Lions Club would fund the purchase of the equipment and would work with community partners to operate the "bank".  Initial equipment available would be limited in order to judge the projects acceptability.  Future additions of equipment would be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Electronic Community Announcement Displays

This project, if approved by The Township, would see the elimination of messy paper bulletins and announcements at The Municipal Building in Cannington.  The Lions Club would fund the purchase and installation of two large electronic displays which would be available for groups and organizations to post announcements.  Not only would regular "still" announcements be possible but short video announcements would be possible as well.

This project would bring community announcements into the 21st century in Brock.

Water Slide in MacLeod Park

This project would involve turning  part of the hill on the North side of MacLeod Park into a water slide.  Part of the hill would undergo construction to fabricate a waterslide and turn it into a destination in hot summer months.

This project is in its very early stages of feasibility analysis.  If it proceeds there will be large funding requirements since costs are likely to be very high.

This project is currently under review by committee members.
